I worked as sound recordist on Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, Showtime’s Emmy-nominated documentary series in which Penn & Teller dissect popular beliefs, pseudoscience, and cultural myths with a mix of research, direct confrontation, and Penn’s signature aggressive delivery.

The show ran for eight seasons from 2003 to 2010 and tackled subjects ranging from recycling and feng shui to the death penalty and the war on drugs. The format blends straight documentary interviews with Penn’s direct-to-camera commentary, ambush confrontations, and hidden camera segments — all often within a single production day.

As the sound recordist, you’re handling all of that in rapid sequence. The interviews are the core of each episode — experts, true believers, and people with skin in the game on whatever subject is being examined. Those subjects were often unaware of the show’s angle, which meant I was working in domestic living rooms, office environments, and locations that hadn’t been scouted or prepped for sound. Quick setup, small footprint, and staying out of Penn’s eyeline while he worked were all part of the job.

It was an entertaining production to be part of — and one of the more unpredictable, which is usually a good thing for a sound mixer who likes a challenge.
